Most of us pick our seafood based on taste, price, or freshness… but did you know that choosing the right seafood can be a way to support gender equality?
Globally 50% of seafood workers are women.
In seafood processing, the percentage goes up to 90%. The efforts paid by women are indispensably irreplaceable to bring seafood to our tables. Yet, multiple NGOs have exposed that the hard work paid by women has been undervalued by the seafood industry.
Despite their efforts, most women can only access low skill, low value, and low pay positions in the value chain, while most decision-making positions are male-dominated. In view of the important role played by women in the seafood industry, it is only logical that improving women’s rights can improve the industry’s performance, especially in seafood processing where 90% of workers are women.
